Program Hub

Everything about our program — goals, team info, our code, and pre-match preparation — all in one place.

Our Daily Commitment
01 Do our 10 Minutes of Mental Preparation.
02 Live our Team Code.
03 Be mindful of whom you have dedicated this season to.
Team Goals

These are the goals our players have set for themselves — on the court, in the classroom, and in how they carry themselves every day. They're shared here not to boast, but because owning your goals out loud is part of what it means to be an Elk.

🤝

Character First

Be constantly respectful and thankful to parents, friends, and supporters.
Be friendly and respectful to teammates and opponents.
Show good sportsmanship, win or lose.
Give people reasons to be proud of your behavior.
Learn and apply "The Law of Compensation."

💪

Health & Self-Control

Stay healthy and injury-free all season.
Miss no practices or matches due to preventable causes.
Learn and apply self-control on and off the court.
Be drug-free during the season — and in the off-season.

📚

Academics

Earn the grades you're capable of.
Be in good standing with every teacher.
No in-school suspensions or detentions.
Strive for Academic All-State Honors
Earn the Silver or Gold Standard for Team GPA (3.50+ / 3.75+).

🧠

Team Before Self

Understand how things are arranged for the good of the team, not just the individual.
Have coaches do their best job in preparation and fairness to all players.
Be prepared to play your best, regardless of the circumstances.
Remember often the theme: "DO IT NOW!!"

10 Minutes of Mental Preparation

Read and reflect through these within one hour of every match — until you have them memorized. 10 minutes is not too much time spent, but it may be too little.

1 Equipment Checklist
  • Racquets — condition? How many? Likely to break a string? Backup?
  • Shoes — comfortable? Extra laces?
  • Jump rope — do 125 jumps before hitting
  • Tape — any injuries? Blisters? Enough?
  • Clothes — extra shirt, socks, towel, warmup clothes, sweat bands, cap?
  • Pain relievers — Ibuprofen/Advil? Muscle relaxers (cream or spray)?
2 Water / Sports Drinks

Pre-hydrate at least 8 oz. Have at least a half gallon with you. Drink at least four gulps on changeovers on cool days, eight gulps on warm/hot days. 50% of each if drinking both water and sports drink.

3 Weather Conditions

Do I have the right clothes for this weather? Will cold or heat be a factor? Will the sun or wind affect play — from which direction? Do the courts have windscreens?

4 Nutrition

When did I last eat? Will I have enough energy for this match? Do I have a snack bar in my bag? "Sugar shakes"?

5 How Am I Feeling Right Now?

Rested? Tired? Exhausted? Full of energy? Nervous? Hungry? Dealing with an injury or stiffness? Prepared?

6 How Will I Greet My Opponent?

Firm handshake — always. Will I smile? (up to you.) Will I look serious? What will I say?

7 Previous Matches Against This Player

Have I ever played them before? Seen them play? Heard how they play? Can I trust what I've heard?
If we've played before — who won? What are our records? What have the scores been?
Did I play well? Did they? Their strengths? Weaknesses? Were they a good line caller? How did they handle winning and losing points?

8 My Game Plans A, B, C

Stay baseline? Serve-and-volley? All-court game?
% of first serves in? Second serve effectiveness? Double faults acceptable?
Where will I locate my first serve each game? At 40-0? At add-in? At add-out?
Will I ever return serve and immediately rush the net for surprise?
If opponent rushes the net the first three times — pass or lob? The fourth time?
How will I react to bad line calls? At what score will I consider changing my Game Plan?
Big lead — what to work on? Small lead? Playing from behind — willing to "grind it out"?

9 When They Win a Big Point — When I Do?
  • Never be overly impressed with any great shot — theirs or yours
  • When you win a big point, focus extra hard on winning the next one. When you lose one, win the next one.
10 The Post-Match Handshake

Always with a firm handshake. Look them in the eye and say "Good match" — whether it was or not. Be the classiest player on the court, every time.

🧠

Read and reflect through all 10 points before every match until you have them memorized. Do it by memory after that. This is one of the most important things you'll do in the hour before you play.

Our 2026 Code

These are the principles that guide how we compete, how we practice, and how we carry ourselves every day as Elks. Read them often.

1Winning is not a "sometime thing"
2Winning is an "all the time" thing
3I can't get around to doing what it takes to win "sometime" — I have to be working at it "all the time"
4That means I have to work at it both physically and mentally
5You don't win in those moments "once in a while" — you do the right thing "all the time"
6Winning at anything is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
7Stop making excuses for losing. Stop fooling yourself.
8Success at anything is not about "having the time" — it's about "making the time"
9If something matters enough to you, you will "make the time" to get done what needs to be done
10You'll have to sacrifice not getting to do some things you want to do if you want to win your prize
11When you don't really want to do something, you need to do it anyway
12When you fight through resistance, you have already succeeded
13I can't stand for laziness — not in others, nor in myself
14"Winning is not everything, but making the effort to win is" (VL)
15"Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do"
16The best player or team doesn't ALWAYS win. Who is better TODAY?
17Become the most positive and enthusiastic person you know
18Learn from your mistakes. Move on.
19Be a good winner. Be a good loser.
20Remember from whom all good things come.

Program History

Elk River tennis has been a cornerstone of Minnesota high school athletics since 1959, with the Girls program following in 1974. Under Coach Ronning — who has led the Boys program since 2008 and Girls since 2016 — the Elks have built one of the most decorated programs in the state, with a state championship in 2012, 34 teams to the state tournament, and 122 individual state appearances.
