How USTA Junior Tournaments Work ▾

Sourced from USTA Northern's own "Junior Tournaments 101" guide and current USTA membership/Net Generation pages — see the reference links below for the originals.

Quick Start
  1. Get a free USTA Junior Membership — good until your 19th birthday month, and required to play any sanctioned tournament.
  2. Search for a tournament on TennisLink: Tournaments → Advanced Search, with Section set to Northern and Division set to Junior, then filter by month.
  3. For a first tournament, look for three things: the correct age division, an entry-level Level 7 event (the lowest, most beginner-friendly level), and a location close to home.
  4. Register online before the entry deadline. Draws are usually posted a few days after entries close — check the tournament's "Draws" tab.
  5. On the day: arrive 30 minutes early, check in at the "tournament desk," then check in again 15–20 minutes before each match and stay within earshot — matches can be called any time after that.
Age Divisions & Ball Progression

Ranked tournament play runs in the boys'/girls' 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18U divisions — a player "ages up" on the first day of their birth month when they're about to turn 13, 15, or 17. Younger players (ages 7-10) come up through USTA Northern's Stars & Trophies 10U Pathway first, progressing through ball colors based on points earned (via USTA's Net Generation PlayTracker), not just age.

BallTypical AgesCourtNote
Red4–836 ft (mini court)~75% reduced compression — bounces lower and slower.
Orange7–1060 ft~50% reduced compression.
Green ("green dot")~9–1178 ft (full court)~25% reduced compression. Also used by some 12U players at Levels 5–7 (see below), not only younger kids.
Yellow~11 and up78 ft (full court)Standard ball — used for all regular 12U–18U ranked tournaments not played with green ball.
Tournament Levels

Within USTA Northern, junior tournaments run from Level 3 (the highest level offered in-Section) down to Level 7 (entry level). Level 7 points are capped at 250 — once a player reaches 250 points in an age group, they must move up to Level 6 or higher for that division. 12U players at Levels 5, 6, and 7 specifically play with a green ball on a 78-foot court, not yellow.

Rankings & Progression

Points are earned only by winning matches (byes don't count) — how many depends on the level, how far a player advances, and the draw format. A player's ranking combines their best 6 singles results plus 15% of their best 6 doubles results, both from a rolling 12-month window. Northern publishes updated rankings every Monday and on the 1st of the month — look yours up on TennisLink under Tournaments → Find a Ranking.

Where to Play

No endorsements unless specifically noted. Confirm hours, access, and any fees directly before you go. Many indoor facilities also run their own pro shop on-site for racquets, restringing, and gear — worth checking before making a separate trip. A "??" in the Restring column means nothing could be confirmed either way, not that they don't offer it — call ahead.
